Lunch at the Anchorage

This weekend the Anchorage have been doing a big gamble. It is to only pay for what you have had.

So the BFM has just had an amazing lunch. I had Beer battered catch of the day (coley), homemade mushy peas, malt vinegar Mayo and triple cooked chips.

Amazing batter, very crisp. Triple cooked chips are basically oven roast for one hour, then fry in medium temperature. Once cooled deep fat fried. Potatoes are peated and everything is cooked from fresh. The coley fish is not dissimilar to cod but more sustainable.

They also do on site smoking with bushmill barrel chips which imparts a lovely flavour.

It has been open from May 2014, was the Enigma and Sullivans in previous lives. I know it will go from strength to strength.

The festival season

The BFM couldn’t but notice what was occurring in the local Tesco supermarket. It’s full steam ahead from now until the big day. Realistically we all know that the real meaning of Christmas pales into insignificance compared with profits.

So please to one and all, in this festive season, don’t forget to remember the meaning of Christmas and those who are not able to celebrate.

The Belfast Pan House

A gr8 idea by a German and English man. Cooking chicken and pork dishes in large wide pans like paella idea. Also serving German pork Bratwurst.

There was chicken in tomato, chicken with peppers, potatoes and bacon (bratkartoffein), pork goulash and pork Schsclik. I tried a bit of them all except the sausages. I can’t choose a favourite, can u?

Welsh or Irish Hog Roast!?!

Greetings from BFM at Continental Market Belfast at City Hall. Today I’m trying the Welsh Hog Roast signature serving, the whole hog baguette (£6).

IMG_1366.JPG

IMG_1353.JPG

I was chatting to John who has been in this game for 40 years. He has a small farm holding near Caerphilly in South Wales, and for the last 30 years has perfected the art of the hog roast. He uses a local pig from near Londonderry crossed with the Welsh White breed hence Welsh/Irish Hog roast!!

The Welsh White Breed has a uniform layer of fat which is the best for roasting and hence crackling.

Everything is made from local produce eg the onions,Bramley apples, sea salt, pepper herbs, spuds and baguettes made by the master patisserie at the market (I will b speaking to him soon, father and son with loads of experience ).

IMG_1361.JPG

John is a busy man he is in at 7am every morning preparing the hog.He rubs it with sea salt, salt, pepper and herbs. Then skewers it and cooks on rotisserie for 8 hours!!!

It is amazing, don’t taken my word for it,come down and sample the baguette to the whole roast dinner!!!
The unit is shaped like a Welsh Cottage and stays in Ireland!!!!

A great lighter pizza

The BFM and family came across this pizza recipe from a chap who was demonstrating good healthy food and selling very pricey pans!!!!

The gent brought all his wares and began by chopping up some onion, mushrooms, peppers and tomatoes. He then grated some cheddar. Meanwhile he heated a frying pan to medium heat and placed a tortilla in it and warmed it up. He spread some tomato purée and added the pizza toppings. Let it cook for a couple of minutes and finished it under the grill for few mins. It was tasty, not a lot of base, the base was crispy and it was so easy to make.So that’s what our dinner was. I added ham and courgettes.

Celebrating Safa food Award

The BFM and Mrs BFM were cordially invited by Ali from Safa Indian Restaurant

IMG_1263-0.JPG

30-32 Bank St
Belfast

The location is above Kelly’s Cellars and next to Mourne Seafood down the alley from Primark, an area I didn’t think would do well,I’m very glad I was proved wrong!!!!

IMG_1264-0.JPG

There was an intimate 15 or so enjoying the evening hospitality. The red and white wine was flowing, but soft drinks for me.

IMG_1265-0.JPG

On the menu was a great on the bone goat handi (from the bros at Broughgammon farm, a chicken masala, nan and pilau rice. Now Ali hails from Sylhet (right on Indian Border).

IMG_1266-0.JPG

We all had a great time and it is easy to see why Safa is number 1 Indian Style restaurant. Definitely be back for more delicious food by Ali.

Inga presented Ali and staff the certificate at the end.
