11th October 2016: Morelli’s Ice Cream has scooped two top awards at the prestigious Blas na h’Éireann, The Irish Food Awards which took place at the start of this month in Dingle, County Kerry (1st October).

The family-owned ice cream brand’s Cherry Frozen Yoghurt was awarded best product in County Derry/Londonderry. The fruity favourite also won Silver in the Sorbets and Frozen Yoghurts category. The mouth-watering frozen treat combines Clandeboye Estate Yoghurt and Amarena Cherry compote to create a winning flavour.

The Blas na h’Éireann, The Irish Food Awards is the biggest competition for Irish produce on the island of Ireland, with 2,500 products entering this year’s competition. The Awards celebrate and reward the very best of Irish produce and the passionate, driven individuals behind it. With gold, silver and bronze medals awarded across over 100 food and drink categories, the Awards focus solely on taste with winners chosen as a result of blind taste tests by Ireland’s top food experts.

Arnaldo Morelli, who heads up the family business and collected both awards alongside his brother Marino, said: “I am so proud that Morelli’s has been recognised at such an important award ceremony in the Irish food industry. It is fantastic to have the hard work of everyone at Morelli’s recognised at a national level and we look forward to continuing to make award-winning flavours for many generations to come.”

Congrats to Muddlers

I paid Gareth a visit to congratulate him on winning The Ulster Tatler Best Restaurant Award. Gareth is the proprietor and head chef here. He has carefully hand selected his front of house and kitchen staff and his ethos is, quote “happy people at work”.

He explained to me that he likes to keep his menus small and only ever uses local produce, except mushrooms which come from France thrice a week!! His kitchen staff and himself would often forage for food. The lunch menu looks lovely and is changed bi weekly, the evening menu is seasonal. Due to the fact that the menu is small I would suggest to look at it online before going as the selection may not appeal to everyone all the time. The restaurant seats 50 and is closed Sunday and Monday. Will have to try the food next time!!
